How(and why) to share astrology in children’s yoga classes

Many yoga teachers have found themselves drawn to astrology at some point in their yoga journey. We often find our class themes tying in with the cycles of the moon and seasons and many teachers delve deeper into this practice. A question have been asked many times is whether it is appropriate to share these practices with children, and if so, how to do it. I firmly believe we should only share as teachers things which feel authentic to us, so if astrology isn’t something which resonates with you there is no need to incorporate it into your lessons. If it is something you feel drawn to share, there are so many benefits in doing so. Here are some of my ideas and thoughts on this topic.

Astrology, often misunderstood as mere fortune-telling, is a rich and profound system that explores the connection between the cosmos and human life. When shared thoughtfully in children's yoga classes, astrology can deepen their connection to themselves, the world around them, and the universal rhythms of life. Let’s explore how you can integrate astrology into your children's yoga sessions, creating a magical and meaningful experience for your young yogis.

The Benefits of Astrology in Children's Yoga

Introducing astrology into children’s yoga classes offers numerous benefits that resonate with their natural curiosity and imagination. Here are a few key advantages:

1. Enhancing Self-Awareness:

Astrology encourages children to explore their own personalities through their zodiac signs. This self-exploration promotes self-awareness, helping them understand their strengths, challenges, and how they interact with others.

2. Cultivating Empathy and Understanding:

By learning about the different zodiac signs, children can develop empathy for others. They start to appreciate that everyone is unique, with their own set of characteristics and ways of responding to the world. This understanding fosters a sense of community and kindness in the yoga class.

3. Connecting with Nature and the Cosmos:

Astrology reminds children of their connection to the cosmos and the natural world. They learn about the cycles of the moon, the movement of the planets, and how these celestial events can influence their moods and behaviours. This cosmic awareness can help children feel more grounded and connected to the world around them.

4. Encouraging Reflection and Mindfulness:

Astrology’s reflective nature complements the mindfulness aspects of yoga. As children learn about their astrological signs, they are encouraged to reflect on how they feel and behave, which can enhance their mindfulness practice during yoga.

How to Introduce Astrology in Children's Yoga Classes

Integrating astrology into children's yoga doesn’t need to be complicated. Here are some simple, creative ways to introduce this cosmic wisdom to your young students:

1. Start with the Basics: The Zodiac Signs

Begin by introducing the 12 zodiac signs in a fun and engaging way. Use stories, images, or even simple props to help children learn about each sign. You can create yoga poses inspired by each sign’s characteristics—like the strong, steady poses for Taurus or the flowing, flexible poses for Pisces.

2. Incorporate Moon Phases into Your Practice

Children are naturally drawn to the moon, making it a perfect entry point into astrology. Discuss the different phases of the moon and how they might influence our energy levels and emotions. Incorporate this into your yoga routine, perhaps with calming practices during the new moon and more energising activities during the full moon.

3. Use Astrology to Personalise Yoga Practices

Once children have a basic understanding of astrology, you can personalise their yoga practice based on their zodiac signs. For instance, a fiery Aries might benefit from grounding poses and breathing exercises, while an airy Gemini might enjoy practices that foster focus and concentration.

4. Celebrate Astrological Events

Astrological events like solstices, equinoxes, or planetary alignments provide wonderful opportunities to create special yoga sessions. Plan your classes around these events, explaining their significance and designing yoga sequences that align with the energy of the occasion.

Creating a Cosmic Connection

Sharing astrology in children's yoga classes is not just about teaching them about the stars; it’s about creating a deeper connection to themselves, to each other, and to the universe. By weaving this ancient wisdom into your yoga sessions, you offer children a unique and enriching experience that blends physical activity with spiritual exploration.

As you incorporate astrology into your classes, remember to keep it light and fun. Children naturally resonate with the imaginative and mystical, so allow them to explore astrology in a way that feels playful and enchanting. The goal is to spark their curiosity, inspire their minds, and help them feel more connected to the cosmic dance that we are all a part of.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating astrology into children's yoga classes opens up a new world of possibilities for enriching young minds and spirits. As they stretch, bend, and breathe, children can also learn to align with the rhythms of the cosmos, fostering a sense of wonder and connection that will stay with them as they grow. If you’re a yoga teacher or parent interested in bringing this magical combination into your practice, start small, be creative, and most importantly, let the children lead the way with their natural curiosity. The stars have much to teach us—especially when we are young and open to the wonders of the universe. By integrating astrology with yoga, you’re not just teaching a class—you’re offering an experience that can nurture a child's body, mind, and soul in a holistic and meaningful way. Let the stars be your guide, and may your children's yoga classes shine with cosmic light!
